Unseasonably mild weather and clear blue skies encouraged many Weyburn area families to enjoy the outdoors over the last weekend of the Christmas-New Year's holidays, including at the sledding hill at Confederation Drive near River Park.

Weyburn's 39th annual James Weir People鈥檚 Choice Exhibition opens for voting with 25 entries on Thursday, Jan. 5 at the Credit Union Spark Centre.

The Weyburn Police Service received 57 calls for service during the week of Dec. 26 through to New Year鈥檚 Day, resulting in one charge under the Traffic Safety Act, and one Criminal Code charge.

The Legacy Park and Sunrise Early Learning Centres held a successful fundraiser, a family fun night on New Year's Eve at the Knox Hall in Weyburn. Richy Roy provided a magic show and DJ services, and carnival games were set up around the hall where kids could try their luck to win prizes. The funds raised will go towards completing the outdoor play spaces for the two day cares, located at Legacy Park and at the Weyburn Comp schools.

Just over 100 fishermen and women registered to take part in the first-ever New Year's Day fish derby, hosted by the Weyburn Wildlife Federation at Nickle Lake. With a moderate temperature around -13 and little wind, conditions were perfect for the derby, which offered prizes for the biggest pike, pickerel and perch, in adult and youth categories.
