WEYBURN - I love a good thrift stop.
Hunting for treasures among the second-hand (previously enjoyed) items is like a scavenger hunt. I have a list in my head of specific items that I am looking for, but it’s the search that makes it fun.
I recently went with a friend to an antique store in the city. We scoured all three floors, and the vast array of contents therein.
Furniture, clothing, games, memorabilia, records, CDs, movies and a massive collection of whosits and whatchamacallits, filled every nook and cranny of the old brick building.
I found what I was looking for, Little Golden Books, and enjoyed haggling with the owner over the more expensive ones. Two of the books were listed at a higher price, so when I told him I would only take one, he knocked the price down on each of them by half. I chuckled a little because by doing that, he wasn’t increasing his revenue. He just gave me two books for the price of one. One I was willing to pay full price for!
I don’t often go to antique stores because they tend to have higher prices, but there are countless thrift stores in our area. If you shop around, you can practically outfit your entire home with previously enjoyed items.
When thrifting for clothing, be sure to look for sustainable and natural fabrics, like cotton, linen, silk, bamboo and hemp.
These fabrics are eco-friendly, and at the end of their lives they will biodegrade and return to the soil.
Some people use their passion for thrifting as a source of income.
I love watching videos of people thrifting, especially if they are going to resell the items. Often times the items that are selling well are ones that were in our home (and many others) in the 1970s and 80s when I was growing up.
If only we had known back then that these now vintage items would fetch top dollar online in 2022!
