Trade and tariffs

Trade with the United States is set to be front and centre this week with tariffs on auto imports into the U.S. expected to come into force. The auto industry has warned tariffs could be devastating to the sector as many parts criss-cross the border many times before ending up in a finished vehicle.

Dollarama results

Dollarama Inc. is scheduled to release its fourth-quarter and full-year results on Thursday morning before financial markets open. The retailer recently announced a deal to buy the Reject Shop, an Australian discount retailer with nearly 400 stores.

Trade data

Statistics Canada will release its reading for international merchandise trade in February on Thursday morning. The figures will capture the first full month of Canada-U.S. trade after U.S. President Donald Trump was sworn into power in January.

Calgary chamber panel

The Calgary Chamber of Commerce will host a panel on Canada-U.S. relations Thursday. Panellists will include Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Canada West Foundation president and CEO Gary Mar, Berkshire Hathaway Energy president and CEO Ed Rihn, and Prince Rupert Port Authority president and CEO Shaun Stevenson.

Jobs report

Statistics Canada will offer up its latest snapshot of the job market in Canada on Friday when it releases its labour force survey for March. The Canadian economy added 1,100 jobs in February as the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.6 per cent.
