Moose Mountain Meats – meeting a local need

Business will soon celebrate 10th anniversary

WAWOTA - Moose Mountain Meats is a locally owned co-operative that is located just south of Wawota on the No. 603 grid. The Observer visited the facility last week and had the opportunity to discuss the business with co-operative shareholder and secretary Michael Green.

Since 1910, Wawota has been home to various privately owned butcher shops. When the last area butcher shop closed its doors in 2008, local livestock farmers came together and decided to build a facility to meet area processing needs. Â鶹ÊÓƵeast Saskatchewan is home to a large number of cattle producers and it was felt that the area needed additional abattoir capacity.

The co-op was formed with shares sold to various interested individuals at a unit price of $1,000. On Jan. 31, 2012, Moose Mountain Meats Co-operative Ltd. opened its doors.

The co-op has received strong local support over the years and has a large trading area. It is provincially licensed and operates under the oversight of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. In addition to cattle, the co-op also processes hogs, sheep, bison, wild game and occasionally goats and alpacas. They have three qualified full-time butchers and five additional full-time and part-time employees.

The co-op also wanted to thank the local farmers and communities for their loyalty and support. Moose Mountain Meats has been in operation for nearly 10 years and is an important part of the community. Families working here live in Wawota, go to school there and support other local businesses. Freshly cut meats and related deli and other products can be purchased right at the store and the staff is helpful and courteous.

Green said, “I am very proud to be a part of this Co-op. We are doing very well and look forward to meeting the needs of both consumers and producers.“
