UNITY – With the month of April seeing a wide variety of weather conditions, the one that concerns the Unity Fire Department is how dry it has been.
While the melt of the snow was slow, the wind that followed seemed to have dried much of the topsoil, creating perfect fire condtions.
Fire Chief Colby Klein reported for the month of April, the Unity Fire Department was called out to eight grass fires. This is on top of other calls, including three EMS lift assists, a carbon monoxide call, a motor vehicle collision and one false alarm.
Many of the local rural municipalities and town limits have fire bans in an attempt to prevent more calls for the hardworking volunteers of the fire departments. Klein stressed that residents should take note of the fire bans and if unsure if the ban is in place, to contact your local RM or town office.
At time of press deadline, there is currently a fire ban for the RM of Eye Hill.
