UNITY — The Unity Fire Department has announced Colby Klein will be taking on the role of fire chief from Dwaine Kopp.
Kopp has been a part of the UFD for 27 years. He served as deputy fire chief for nine and a half years and fire chief for the past three years.
“I have decided to hand over the reins and retire. I have enjoyed my time on the department and will miss it,” said the outgoing chief.
Klein was asked by the other executive chief and the deputy chiefs about the position.
“As a team, they decide who would be best suited to fill the position. They consider multiple factors including years of service, dedication, skill and knowledge,” said the new chief.
Klein has been a member of the Unity Fire Department for 19 years, starting as a junior firefighter at the age of 16. He moved up in the ranks once he turned 18, becoming a firefighter, a driver and then a captain.
He does credit Kopp for his contributions to growth and dedication to the department.
“The promotion of chief comes with big shoes to fill and a high precedent to live up to. The opportunity and trust put on me to fill those shoes is an honour,” said Klein.
Kopp was praised for always being willing to help and going above and beyond. His reliability and generosity could always be counted on.
“On behalf of all of our members, we wish Dwaine a great retirement. His years of service will not go unrecognized, and we hope he spends time doing what he loves most,” added Klein.
