Christmas displays and lights in Waseca were exceptional this year. Congratulations to all who took the time and made the effort to make the village look beautiful at this special time of year.
The Village of Waseca and Waseca Recreation Board sponsored prizes, which were awarded to Pat and Neil Morrison, Bev and Jack Schonhofor and Brenda and Willie Pluhowy.
This Christmas, Benjamin Gebauer from Hannover, Germany came back to visit the Hult family with whom he stayed for the 2004-05 school year. He attended Grade 12 in Maidstone High and graduated from there in the summer of 2005. Back in Germany, following high school graduation, he studied civil engineering at the Leibniz University in Hannover. Presently he is on a Fulbright Scholarship attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. Next summer he will return to Germany to finish a master's degree.
Benjamin decided to spend Christmas in Canada because the flight is much shorter and it was nice to come back to visit with friends and family.
This Christmas we learned of the death of Alvin Krahn of Lanigan. In her letter this year, his wife, Helga, said Alvin passed away on Jan. 6 following a year spent in the nursing home in Lanigan.
Alvin and his family moved to Waseca in 1970, where he spent the next four years teaching Grades 4, 5 and 6 in Waseca School. He enjoyed his students and the community, taking an active part in as many activities as possible, always with the objective of having his students succeed. He had a natural sense of humour and a love of language. He enjoyed people, those he met through school activities, principals' meetings and church activities.
Alvin taught in several schools in the province including the Glenbush area where he was born and where he met and married his wife, Helga.
After leaving Waseca, Alvin and his family settled in Lanigan where, in 1982, he bagan work with the Potash Corporation planning office.
Alvin will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years; his three sons, Lyle and family of Saskatoon; Pastor Aubrey and family of Winnipeg; and Randy of Saskatoon, as well as numerous family members and friends who will remember his kind heart and gentle nature. He was a man to whom family and church were extremely important.
