50 years ago

Ron Woytowich of Battleford was hired by the Town of Unity as a special constable with specific duties being to enforce the dog control bylaw. Woytowich was allowed to use his tranqualizer gun in the course of carrying out his duties.

A 100-ton electrical generator, capable of producing 70,000 kilowatts of power, arrived at the new power station four miles north of Landis.

Lyle Penley, United Grain Growers elevator manager at Wilkie, received a Top Ten award from the company.

Diedre Kappel, a student at Leipzig School, won the superintendency trophy in public oratory for Grade 1 in a speak-off held in Unity at St. Peter’s Hall.

The Senlac 4-H Club donated $150 towards renovation of the Senlac Hall.

April 1, 1975, was the day Canada’s weather reporters started giving temperatures in degree Celsius.

UCHS students Kalyn Kist and Lyndon Brown won first place at the regional science fair with their project “Magnetize this.” They would attend nationals in May.

Nine clubs from outside the community converged on Unity for the two-day Unity Festival of Dance, giving a boost to the local economy.

The Karen Fell foursome of Wanda Heitt, Barb Brown and Cathy Thompson had a perfect 5-0 record in the round robin portion of the national Royal Purple curling championships but lost to Manitoba in the final.
