The Edmonton Elks have hired J.C. Sherritt as the team's defensive coordinator, .

Sherritt spent the 2024 season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders as the team's run game coordinator and linebackers coach. He helped the Green and White become the league’s most stout run defence, averaging 80.3 rushing yards allowed per game. Saskatchewan led the CFL with 49 turnovers, including a CFL-best 24 forced fumbles with 14 recovered.

From 2020 to 2023, Sherritt spent four years working in the NCAA. He was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Cal Poly for two seasons, then went to Auburn University as a defensive position analyst and joined Washington State University as a defensive analyst.

Sherritt started his coaching career with the Calgary Stampeders in 2019 as linebackers coach. He spent time on the same coaching staff as Mark Kilam who has become the head coach in Edmonton.

The Truckee, Calif. native played eight seasons in the CFL with the Edmonton Football Team. He recorded 528 tackles, 15 sacks, 14 interceptions, and seven fumble recoveries in 109 career games. He was named the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2012 and won the Grey Cup in 2015 with the Green and Gold.

During his NCAA playing career, Sherritt played at Eastern Washington from 2006-2010. He set the Big Sky Conference record for most tackles in a season with 170 in 2009 and improved that mark in 2010 with 176 en route to the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the best defensive player in the FCS.
 
Sherritt won an FCS national championship with the Eagles in 2010, the same year he was the Big Sky Conference's Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his Eastern Washington career as a two-time consensus first-team FCS All-American in 2009 and 2010 with 432 tackles, No. 4 in the Big Sky record book.
