Frost Regina gets underway

Frost Regina is bringing a new snowboarding event, 'The Grind', which will begin on Friday.

REGINA - The signature winter festival, Frost Regina, is back for its fourth annual year.

Spectators across the city stood around Victoria Park to kick off the opening ceremonies, with Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski in attendance.

Bachynski mentioned that the winter festival "is one of the best in Canada," citing a report done by The Globe & Mail.

He mentioned his personal excitement for the newest Regina Frost event, 'The Grind.' The snowboarding event will bring in 14 Canadian snowboarding athletes who will descend in Victoria Park, bringing in a different kind of energy and excitement that the event has not seen before.

'The Grind' takes place over two days. On Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., training and qualifiers will seed the competitors. Then, on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. will be the main event, which is a head-to-head competition plus a best-trick competition.

On Thursday, organizers were seen putting in the finishing touches to the area, including laying out snow and constructing the slope.

Along with 'The Grind,' the downtown hub also has numerous activities happening this weekend, including community skating, street curling, and playing Mario Kart on the big screen.

There are also two other main hubs for Regina Frost, the Wascana Hub and the Warehouse Hub.

The Wascana Hub offers skating on a rink, horse and wagon rides at the legislature, dog sledding, a petting zoo and more.

Meanwhile, the Warehouse Hub is offering a brewery tour, an adventure park, and a celebration of Celtic culture on certain days.

To make all this happen, the City of Regina provides $260,000 of funding, which goes towards Frost Regina. Tourism Regina also provided 'The Grind' with a $50,000 grant.

Bachynski also mentioned the importance of providing community safety during the event, which includes getting spectators home safely through a designated drive program provided by SGI.

There is also temporary transit changes to accommodate those without a vehicle, as transit Stop 4001 will be providing service further south along the west side of Victoria Park.

One notable difference from this year’s event compared to last year’s is the schedule. In the past, the event would span a week, but in 2025, Frost Regina will only be four days.

Frost Regina continues till Sunday. Additional information about the event can be
