WEYBURN – The 2023-24 season for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings has come to an end, with a 3-0 loss in the seventh and deciding game of their quarter-final playoff series on Tuesday night in Humboldt.
The Red Wings forced the seventh game by winning at home on March 31 by 2-1 on home ice. All of the wins in this series were on home ice, as the Red Wings made the series exciting with close wins, one of them in overtime.
In the final game, the action was very close and very tight with no scoring in the first or second periods.
Penalty trouble was part of the downfall for the Red Wings, as the Broncos scored twice on the power play in the third period about two minutes apart.
The Red Wings pulled goaltender Dazza Mitchell with about three and a half minutes to try and get a goal on the board, but the Broncos ended up putting the puck in the empty net to clinch the series win, and they will now move on to the semi-finals.
Mitchell made 34 saves on 36 shots on net.
The Red Wings will now prepare to host their spring camp, set for the weekend of April 26-28 at Crescent Point Place.
