Weyburn Red Wing tie series with Humboldt, sends it to seventh game

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings tied up their best-of-seven series at three games each, with a 2-1 win on home ice on Sunday night after losing 4-1 on Friday.

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings tied up their best-of-seven series at three games each, with a 2-1 win on home ice on Sunday night after losing 4-1 on Friday night in Humboldt.

In Sunday’s win, Jaxson Ruthven was the first Red Wing to score at 3:43 of the second period, assisted by Liam Fitzgerals.

Humboldt tied the game about 10 minutes later, and in the third period, the tight back-and-forth action went on until Matthew Hodson scored on the power play with 1:02 left in the game to claim the win. Max Monette and Jerome Maharaj assisted on the play.

Dazza Mitchell was solid in net, as he saved 26 of the 27 shots made on the goal.

Crescent Point Place was packed, with a total of 1,065 spectators on hand for the crucial playoff game.

In Friday’s game, the Red Wings’ lone goal was by Maharaj on the power play, assisted by Nick Kovacs.

Mitchell was in net most of the game, until he was pulled late in the third for the extra attacker, enabling the Broncos to finish the game off with an empty-netter with 52 seconds left in the game.
