Weyburn Gold Wings edged out by Wildcats in final playoff game

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings took their final playoff game into overtime, but were swept in two games by the Swift Current Wildcats

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings took their final playoff game into overtime, but in the end were swept in two games by the Swift Current Wildcats on Sunday evening at Crescent Point Place.

The Gold Wings had lost their first game of the best-of-three series in Swift Current by a score of 6-2 on Friday evening.

Prior to the start of Sunday night’s game, the six Gold Wings who will be graduating from the team were introduced and presented with flowers.

They included Sydney Dauvin, Jenay Hyndman, Ashton Bender, Jacey Farr, Julianne Girardin and Paisley Arntsen.

The Gold Wings had a strong start to the game, as Julia Durr got Weyburn on the scoreboard first at 1:10 of the first period, assisted by Camryn Fuessel.

Paisley Arntsen then scored later in the period, assisted by Hadley Revenko, before the Wildcats got one back with 45 seconds to go in the period.

Swift Current struck twice in the second period to take the lead, but then Revenko of the Gold Wings tied the game with an unassisted goal in the third period to send it into overtime.

The play was close and it took until the second overtime period before the Wildcats scored to win the game and the playoff series.

Amy Swayze was in goal for the Gold Wings, saving 49 of the 53 shots on net.

In Friday’s game, the Gold Wings’ Ashton Bender got Weyburn on the board in the first period with 1:30 to go, assisted by Kendal Leader and Addison Longmore.

Swift Current tied the game in the second period, and then Arntsen scored from Julianne Girardin to retake the lead.

The third period was all Swift Current, as they scored five times to take the win.

Hailey Sibbald was the netminder for the full 60 minutes, saving 45 of the 51 shots on net.
