For the past 20 years the Wawota Lions have been hosting a Farmers and Ranchers Golf Tournament at Golf Kenosee. During these years it has been a main fundraiser of the Wawota and District Lions to fund the various initiatives they have undertaken over the years.
This year the golf tournament was fewer in numbers than previous years, but still able to draw in 100 participants it was well worth the efforts.
"I think it might be weather related," Wawota Lions president Joel Carpenter said. "It's a nice day and guys are still out in their fields spraying which might be why we have a smaller turnout."
He also explained that although numbers were down the event still raised substantial funds for the club, while providing a venue for agriculturally focused businesses to meet with farmers and ranchers in the industry.
"A lot of industry people are here and it's good for sponsors to come out and shake over 100 farmers hands in one day, the only other place that will happen is at a farm show," Carpenter stated.
This year, like every other year, the Lions were able to muster fantastic support from various sponsors and offer great prizes.
This year there were five chances to win hole-in-one prizes ranging from $15,000 cash to a side by side off-road vehicle, a 2014 F150, a 2014 New Holland compact tractor, and a 2014 GMC crew cab.
Other than this there were numerous prize draws done for Pro Shop gift certificates to Golf Kenosee, a television, golf clubs, jackets, and much more.
The day began with breakfast for the competitors and after a day on the course supper was served at Club 19, with prizes awarded following the meal.
The tournament winner was Phil Greenwood who shot a 75. He received a $100 gift certificate to the Golf Kenosee Pro Shop for their efforts.
Wawota and District Lions member Darrell Peterson explained that the Lions will be hosting Provincial Midget playoffs between July 25 and 27. In addition to this they will be hosting a dance on Saturday, Aug. 2, during the Wawota Heritage Days.
The Wawota Lions have also assisted in renovations with the Lions Play Park, though the Wawota Business Association is spearheading the project making it a collective effort.
Although the Lions were slightly disappointed with numbers, having nearly 150 last year compared to the 100 attendees this year, it was still a great success and a lot of fun for many. Allowing people in the agriculture industry to meet and visit throughout the day, it was nice for many to simply take a day off and enjoy a game of golf for a great cause.
Carpenter believes the fundraiser will have been able to bring in between $7,000 and $8,000 after expenses, though a final tally has not yet been compiled.
