Football is a sport in Saskatchewan that many people enjoy. The Roughriders have helped to give young players something to aspire to, while the CFL and NFL at large entice many youth into wanting to play.

Not all communities, however, are able to host a football program in their school or town. So, if a youth is interested in playing they do not always have the opportunity. For those who really want to play, however, they can try out for a team willing to take players from surrounding areas.

This is how numerous local youth came into experiencing football with the Moosomin Generals, a junior nine man football team recruiting outside of Moosomin.

"These [local] boys were recruited when a member of the Moosomin executive toured around the area in early April and set up presentations at the local schools recruiting students to play football this spring to bolster their Junior program," Tim Raymond explained.

These local youth included his son, Nathan Raymond of Redvers, as well as five other youth from the area including Austin Sens of Redvers, Austin Dufresne of Redvers, Tanner Dufresne of Redvers, Zack Faber of Carlyle, and Donovan Pryce from Wawota. The majority of these boys made up the offensive line of the Generals over the spring, while Austin Dufresne played as a defensive back for the team.

The boys enjoyed their time with Moosomin this spring as they were given the opportunity to play in five exhibition games. In addition to the five games, where they battled two different Yorkton teams and a Melville team, the boys also took in two practices a week until games began on May 22 where they were able to learn a great deal from the coaches.

The spring season for the boys went well, with the Moosomin Generals able to win two of five games. Though those they lost were close matches as well with a game against the Yorkton Raiders coming down to a difference of four points.

The team is excited to see how much they can improve in the fall season and to see just what they can do.

As a spectator Tim explained, "It was definitely and exciting change this spring as we normally spend it at the baseball diamonds or soccer fields but this year we were entertained with some exciting tackle football."

This fall the youth will again take to the field with practices beginning on Aug. 12 for the team to begin their training.

"We are looking forward to the fall season and anticipating a very strong Moosomin Generals Squad to be suiting up again with a nice contingent of players from the Redvers, Carlyle and Wawota area," Tim stated.

The Generals run different groups in the spring and fall. The spring groups include an eight and under, 10 and under, and 13 and under flag football program, Junior Varsity tackle football for grades seven- nine, as well as a Senior Varsity tackle for youth in grades 10-12. In the fall the program just runs the Junior Varsity and Senior Varsity teams.

The spring sessions are considered a "community football program," while the fall season sees the Moosomin Generals compete in the Rural Manitoba Football League (RMFL) in the south division against the Parkwest Outlaws, Â鶹ÊÓƵwest Sabres, and the Virden Golden Bears. The north division is made up of the Swan Valley Tigers, the Dauphin Clippers, East Parkland Warriors, and the Neepawa Tigers.
