Less than a month after capturing first place in the Saskota Baseball League, the Carlyle Cardinals played their way to first place in the Senior A Provincial Championship on Sunday, August 10, after an 8-2 victory over the second-place Yorkton Yankees.
The Cardinals' August 8-10 weekend of wins began with a Friday night victory over the Bruno Bisons and continued Saturday with a 3-0 shutout over the Meadow Lake White Sox. Sunday morning's 6-1 victory over the Findlater Braves sent the Cardinals to the gold medal game against Yorkton.
The first two innings were a slow start for the Cardinals. However, in the third inning, the Cardinals were 2-1 until the fifth, when they advanced to a 4-1 score over the Yankees. The sixth-inning scoring streak by the Cardinals effectively cinched them the championship, as the score remained 8-2 until the end.
Both the Cardinals' centre-fielder Parker Cameron and right-fielder Daniel Rasmussen credit pitcher Josh Hohn for much of the Cardinals' momentum.
"Everyone played really well," said Cameron. "It started out as a close game. We decided to kick it up a notch...Our pitching and fielding was amazing tonight."
Rasmussen agrees. "We had very good pitching."
Eight teams vied for the right to be named the top team in the province. In addition to the first-place Cardinals and the runner-up Yankees, other teams that came to Carlyle to compete included the Macklin Lakers, the Findlater Braves, the Watrous Lakers, the Meadow Lake White Sox, the Arm River Indians and the Bruno Bisons.
Games were originally slated to be played at the ball diamonds at Kenosee Ball Park and Carlyle's Lions Park. However, after flooding at the Kenosee diamond, a hasty reshuffle by organizers allowed he tournament to continue entirely in Carlyle.
The Cardinals have previously won the Saskatchewan Senior A Provincial Championships in 2007, 2009 and 2010, as well as having won the A2 Provincial Championships in 2006.
Summing up the season, the Cardinals' Rasmussen says, "We had a really solid weekend for the guys. We battled through this [final] game. We were behind early, so we gutted it and came through. We had a feeling this year was going to be the year and it was."
