WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service experienced a busy week responding to 110 calls for service during the period of May 30 to June 5. The Weyburn Police had an increased presence during the busy week, and would like to thank the residents and visitors who helped make the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show a safe and enjoyable event.
Only two charges were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada during the week as the majority (10) were laid under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA) for a variety of traffic-related violations. The traffic violations that yielded a charge during the week include speeding, using a communication device while driving, disobeying a stop sign, failing to wear a seatbelt, and driving without a valid driver’s license.
Weyburn residents will see an even higher presence of police this week as many agencies will be in the city as part of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) that the Weyburn Police Service is hosting today, June 8, and Thursday, June 9.
STEP is a multi-agency task force dedicated to improving traffic safety across Saskatchewan. Members include municipal police agencies from across the province, the RCMP, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol, Canadian Pacific Police, and representatives from SGI and the Ministries of Justice and Finance.
Police from around Saskatchewan will be working alongside partner agencies to identify traffic violations and take enforcement action. This two-day initiative will take place at various locations in and near Weyburn.
Enforcement activities will focus on offences related to speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt use, unlicensed drivers, and commercial vehicle standards. As always, impaired driving enforcement will be a top priority.
