WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 83 calls for service during the period of Jan. 16-22, resulting in a total of 13 charges. Of the charges, 11 were traffic related and the other two were Criminal Code violations.
The week was busy with routine calls for service such as well-being checks, traffic collisions, parking offences, alarms, and bylaw infractions that were mostly due to snow clearing. Officers also completed a number of pro-active community-based initiatives, such as attending the Weyburn Comprehensive School to speak to students about social media and bullying.
During the week, officers on patrol performed a traffic stop on a vehicle that appeared to have several safety concerns. Officers found the vehicle to be displaying an unauthorized plate, and the driver was breaching a condition of their release, as they were not to have contact with an individual who was in the vehicle with them. The driver was charged under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA) for the traffic violation as well as under the Criminal Code of Canada for failing to comply with their release conditions.
Late Saturday night, officers were called to a licensed establishment as several intoxicated individuals were being belligerent and refusing to leave at the request of staff. Officers arrived to find four adult males who were heavily intoxicated standing outside the establishment, one of whom had an open bottle of alcohol.
Officers attempted to reason with the individuals to ensure they were leaving and had a safe ride home but the individuals were uncooperative with the officers. One of the individuals was ultimately arrested and held in custody overnight until he was sober and released without charge. The other individuals had a sober person pick them up and left without further incident.
Following a complaint from a concerned motorist, police located and warned the driver of a vehicle that was pulling an individual who was holding onto a rope attached to the vehicle and sliding on the snow-covered streets. The youth being pulled was also warned of the dangers as well as the fact that both the driver and the person being pulled could be charged under the TSA. The individuals respectfully heeded the warning.
