ESTEVAN - Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for the entire southeast region.

According to the advisory, issued at 1:15 p.m. Friday, smoke from forest fires in B.C. and the Prairie provinces continues to give poor air quality at times to portions of southern Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada says smoke and haze originating from the B.C. wildfires will continue to move into southern Saskatchewan in waves over the weekend. As a result, many areas of the province will see deteriorating air quality from time to time through Sunday.

The advisory states individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

“Stay inside if you have breathing difficulties. Find an indoor place that's cool and ventilated. Using an air conditioner that cools and filters air may help. If you open the windows you may let in more polluted air,” Environment Canada said.

“If your home isn't air-conditioned, consider going to a public place … that is air-conditioned.”

If you or those in your care are exposed to wildfire smoke, Environment Canada says to consider taking extra precautions to reduce your exposure. Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gases which includes many chemicals that can harm your health.
