REGINA - Crews from the City of Regina are busy on the city streets Monday following this weekend’s winter storm.
Tyler Bien, Manager for Seasonal Operations for the city, updated reporters Monday afternoon on the efforts of crews to clear the snow on Sunday and Monday.
Bien said the snowstorm hit the city Sunday morning and continued throughout the day, with approximately eight to 10 cm of heavy wet snow that actively melted on the roadway system throughout the day.
“During the snow event, crews worked to keep the major roads driveable by plowing snow and applying ice control as needed,” said Bien.
Ice control is the practise of putting down salt and sand on the street to assist in melting the snow as well as provide traction.
Since the start of the snowstorm, Bien said city crews have focused on ice control on the category one through three streets, focussing on high speed roads, roads with the greatest volumes and emergency routes. Bien also noted there has been plowing on the on-and-off ramps, and they have been attending any trouble spots present throughout the city and on perimeter roads.
“With mild temperatures, and active melting on the streets, one of our main priorities is ice control to maintain seasonal driving conditions on the road network. Residents are urged to leave extra time for travel and to plan your routes accordingly.”
This marked the first snow of the season, but despite the early start to winter the city was ready for the snow to arrive. Bien to,d reporters that at this time of the year the city are wrapping up their construction season and getting ready to transition to winter needs. Sanders were available and equipment was available to plow snow, he said.
The onset of winter weather is not impacting any remaining construction projects such as along Arcola Ave. in the city.
Bien said the majority of the streets have melted down to the pavement already, and the priority now is ice control on those roads as well as addressing trouble spots that are seeing drifting snow from the high winds.
