Ogema student receives Saskatchewan Youth Award

Katie Bacon of Ogema was one of six young people to receive the Saskatchewan Youth Award.

Premier Brad Wall presented the Saskatchewan Youth Award to six young people in Regina on May 31, including Katie Bacon of Ogema. The Saskatchewan Youth Award is bestowed on citizens ages 15 to 24 who have made significant contributions to Saskatchewan through personal accomplishments and outstanding achievement. "The outstanding leadership of these six young citizens has inspired those around them and they have become role models - to young and old alike," Wall said. "Their actions and efforts demonstrate beyond any doubt, that youth play a crucial role in the future of our province, and that future is bright." Bacon was selected for demonstrating outstanding accomplishments in leadership, volunteerism and academic excellence. She was part of the Saskatchewan Safety Council's Power Pac Program which allowed her to share her knowledge about farm safety by presenting to elementary schools in the surrounding area. She has also volunteered at Vacation Bible School and Sunday School Christmas pageants.Bacon volunteers at Ogema Regional Park, where she is head lifeguard, by painting and cleaning the park and pools and working in the kitchen. Bacon was a recipient of the Badlands Recreation Association Volunteer Award and has won awards for jazz, ballet, and tap dancing. She was a member of the Ogema Dance Club where she helped a visually impaired child discover the joy of dance.Bacon was the recipient of the Governor General's award and earned "best all-around student" at her high school in 2008. Also in 2008, she was chosen to participate in the Lieutenant Governor's Leadership forum.Bacon just completed her first year at the University of Regina in Pre-Medicine.
