WEYBURN – Staff for the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division will gather in Weyburn on Wednesday, Feb. 1, for an inservice leadership day.
The day is off for students as the Weyburn Comprehensive School and other high schools in the southeast switches over to the second semester.
The board of trustees were told some of the details of the professional development day, which will be held at St. Michael School.
The leadership day will focus on student success, and there will be four break-out sessions.
A session leader will take middle years teachers through activities around student diversity; staff will also learn about supporting intensive student needs; addressing reading gaps in the classroom; and executive functioning.
Leaders will take teachers through the issue of reading gaps in Grades 1-3, and 4-5, an issue that arose out of the COVID restrictions in the previous two years.
Terry Jordens, the superintendent of student services and assessment, also informed the board that the school division has seen an increase in the number of students with intensive needs.
She noted each school division is required to submit information to the Education ministry on this situation, and on what supports are needed for their students.
Currently Holy Family has 71 students who have intensive needs, which is an increase of 14 from last year.
Of these, 12 students have intellectual disabilities, and 12 are on the autism spectrum, said Jordens, plus there are students who are young and are still being diagnosed as to what their needs are.
