Between Dec. 3 and Dec. 14 students at G.F. Kells competed in a food drive. For the last 10 years they have held the drive before a Mosaic meal where each grade is assigned a country and the school eats a number of items from around the world.

The grade sevens will bring Chinese food, grade eights Mexican food, and grade nines Italian food. The grade tens are in charge of Ukranian food, the grade 11s are doing appetizers, and the grade 12s will make desserts.

In order to eat first at Mosaic on Dec. 21, the school created the food drive competition, which the grade sevens usually win. This year the competition came underway and each food item would be counted as one point, except on double point days where the item would be counted for two points.

In total the school was able to raise 2,505 food items in total for the Carlyle and District Food Bank, which is, according to Trent Johnson, close to double what they've raised other years.

Following grade tabulations it was discovered the grade 12s won the competition averaging 69 items per student. The grade 11s came in second with a few decimal points over 30, while the grade nines averaged a few decimals below 30 taking third. The grade eights came in fourth, the grade tens in fifth, and surprisingly the grade sevens in last.

"Usually the grade sevens win," Johnson stated.

This year a number of students in the senior end bought a number of donation items from money out of their own pocket. The grade 12s taking the competition seriously by running to the store at noon in order to bring in a last minute surge of items by the deadline of 1 p.m.

The school appreciates the donations given to them by the Â鶹ÊÓƵern Plains Co-op as well.

The fun competition amongst grades was done in order to help others and G.F. Kells is happy to be able to donate their efforts to the Food Bank.
