Ever since Arcola School hosted Challenge Day last semester the grade seven class has taken it upon themselves to continue making a difference through creating weekly challenges.
The class, made up of only nine students, are described by their teacher Heather Saarela as "fabulous."
One of the students' goals included raising money for an animal shelter. The idea developing on the heels of someone explaining that donating to those in need in Africa should be on their list, while later they thought they should do something closer to home. The class therefore decided to support the Estevan Humane Society following a vote on various causes.
The students held two bake sales and easily raised $326.75, to donate to the Humane Society, which they happily handed a cheque to Regan Bruce and Roxy, a Shih Tzu currently being housed in the Estevan Humane Society.
Bruce brought Roxy to accept the cheque on Wednesday, June 4, and the pair sat with the grade seven class to discuss what the Humane Society does.
"It's like a homeless shelter for animals," Bruce explained. "We do take in the sick ones if we absolutely have to, but we don't have a vet in our services, so usually it's just giving them a place, food, water, and giving them exercise."
Currently Bruce said that the Estevan Humane Society is at approximately 80 to 90 percent full when it comes to dogs and surprisingly their cat population is at 50 percent capacity.
"Twenty-five cats have been adopted in the last two months," Bruce stated, which is an anomaly but with the help of social media they are able to better reach those wanting an animal.
"Facebook has actually helped us a lot. Being able to share with people what animals we have there has been very good for us."
