ESTEVAN — The Estevan Police Service arrested a couple of people last week for drug trafficking.

According to the EPS, on Oct 29, members executed a search warrant at a local hotel after a man and woman from British Columbia were arrested for drug trafficking offences during a traffic stop.

The search warrant stemmed from an EPS Patrol Division investigation which led to the seizure of cocaine with a street value of approximately $80,000 and Canadian currency in excess of $5,000.

As a result of this investigation,Minhaaz Aryan Ali and Cristina McGillivary were charged with possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine); trafficking a schedule I substance (cocaine); and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The accused were remanded in custody and appeared in Estevan Provincial Court on Nov. 4 for a show-cause hearing. No further information was immediately available.

In other recent news, on Nov. 1, police were requested to conduct a well-being check on a woman who resided in Estevan. Members attended and spoke with family members who stated that she was safe and was staying with friends.

A report of fraud was received, however the investigation determined the matter to be unfounded.

Police received a report of an assault that took place on the previous evening. The matter remains under investigation.

A report of a possible impaired driver leaving a local convenience store was received by EPS. Members located the truck and conducted a traffic stop, during which the driver showed no signs of impairment. It was however determined that the 56-year-old man was an unauthorized driver, which resulted in a charge under the Traffic Safety Act and impoundment of his vehicle.

Following a driving complaint, a traffic stop was made in central Estevan that resulted in a 17-year-old Estevan man being arrested for impaired driving. He was transported to EPS where he was charged and subsequently released to his parents. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Estevan Provincial Court on Jan. 6, 2025.

EPS members conducted a traffic stop in northeast Estevan that resulted in a 49-year-old Redvers man receiving a 21-day roadside driver's license suspension and having his vehicle impounded based on the result of a breath sample provided into an approved screening device for alcohol.

A 32-year-old Estevan woman was arrested following a domestic disturbance that resulted in minor injuries to a man. She was transported to EPS where she was charged with assault and released on conditions. She is scheduled to make her first court appearance in Estevan on Jan. 6, 2025.

Members attended to a central Estevan establishment on the report of a man causing a disturbance on the street. The man was spoken to and sent on his way without further issue.

The EPS responded to 53 calls for service over the weekend of Nov. 1-3, including mental health occurrences and well-being checks; two reported frauds; one occurrence related to uttering threats to cause bodily harm; three assaults resulting in Criminal Code charges; several suspicious vehicles and persons were reported and investigated; multiple report impaired driver (RID) calls were received, resulting in two impaired driving arrests; and seven charges were laid under the Traffic Safety Act.
