WEYBURN - Weyburn’s city council approved an application by the Weyburn Beavers ball club to sell beer at Tom Laing Park this season.

The application was made by team president Garnet Hansen, who noted the club is in the process of renewing their licence through the Sask. Liquor and Gaming Authority.

Approval from city council is a requirement of the permit process.

City manager Mathew Warren noted that administration forwarded the request to the Weyburn Police Service and the parks department for any comments, and both parties responded there were no problems with the request.

The Weyburn Beavers are slated to open their season with a home game on Thursday, May 25 at Tom Laing Park, with the Regina Red Sox.

• In other council business, Mayor Marcel Roy announced that six families from war-torn Ukraine have arrived in Weyburn.

He also noted the Women of Distinction Awards gala will be held on Friday May 5 by the YF Wives Club.

• The applications for mail-in ballots opened on April 17, and will close on May 30, for those unable to vote on election day, on May 31, or in the advance polls.

The byelection was called to replace the council seat left vacant by Coun. Dick Michel, who stepped down for health reasons.

As of the close of nominations, there are four candidates on the ballot: Dana Pretzer, Larry Heggs, Brandon Tichkowsky and Trevor Tessier.
