SOUTHEAST SASKATCHEWAN - There is still a lot to be decided as the Big Six Hockey League enters its final weekend of the season.
The only thing for certain is the Wawota Flyers (0-14-1) will get the eighth and final playoff spot in the eight-team league. The Flyers have one point with just one game remaining, and they can't catch the seventh-place Midale Mustangs, who have eight points.
Wawota played twice on the weekend, falling 11-3 to the Moosomin Rangers on Friday night and 10-7 to the Carlyle Cougars on Saturday.
Two teams are battling for top spot. The Redvers Rockets (12-0-2) occupy first with 26 points and two games to play, one more than the Moosomin Rangers (12-2-1), who have 25 points and one game remaining.
The Rockets' most recent game was a 10-0 drubbing of the Mustangs on Monday night. Not only did the Rangers beat Wawota handily on Friday, but they edged the host Oxbow Huskies 4-3 Saturday night.
The tightest battle is for third spot between the Carnduff Red Devils, the Huskies and the Cougars. Carnduff occupies third spot with a 10-5 record and 20 points with one game remaining, followed by the Carlyle Cougars (9-5-1, 19 points, also one game remaining) and the Huskies, fifth at 9-5, two games remaining.
Carnduff defeated the Midale Mustangs 11-4 on Friday night. Carlyle crushed the Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings 9-3 on Wednesday.
Kipling-Windthorst and Midale are vying for sixth. The Oil Kings have a 4-10-1 record and nine points, while the Mustangs (3-10-2) have eight. Each team has one game remaining.
As for the remaining games, Carnduff will visit Moosomin on Jan. 24. Three games are slated for the following day: Kipling-Windthorst at Redvers, Oxbow at Midale and Carlyle at Wawota. Those game all have 8 p.m. start times.
The season will wrap up on Jan. 26 with Oxbow at Redvers, starting at 6 p.m.
