SOUTHEAST SASKATCHEWAN - The Redvers Rockets defeated the the Moosomin Rangers 5-2 Friday night in a battle between the top two teams in the Big Six Hockey League.
The game was tied at 1-1 after the first period, with Kenton Miller scoring for Redvers and Phil Fath responding for Moosomin.
Redvers took over in the second, with Naton Miller scoring early in the frame, and Brady Gaudet and Braeden Magotiaux scoring 18 seconds apart late in the stanza.
Naton Miller added his second of the game early in the third. Justin Lamontagne finished the scoring late in the period for Moosomin.
Cody Matthewson was in goal for Redvers, whose record improved to 11-0-2, and Levi Horn was the goalie for Moosomin (10-2-1).
It wasn't the only marquee game Friday night, as the Carnduff Red Devils knocked off the Carlyle Cougars 5-3 in a battle between two teams battling for third. Casey Thompson scored in the first for Carnduff, and Nico Anderson and Tanner Froese added goals in the second for a 3-0 Red Devils' lead.
Randen Schmidt, Taysen Holt and Ty Brown scored for Carlyle to tie the game at 3-3, but Ben Hiltz scored with 1:54 to play in the middle frame to put Carnduff back in front.
Cooper Bowman scored in the third for the Red Devils.
Cody Dumaine was in goal for Carnduff and Curtis Meger was the Carlyle goalie.
Carnduff has a 9-5 record and 18 points, while Carlyle is fifth at 7-5-1 and 15 points. The Oxbow Huskies are fourth at 8-4 and 16 points. Teams play a 16-game season.
The Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings edged the Wawota Flyers 4-3 in overtime in Friday's other game. Carson Harcourt's third of the game with 2:17 to play in the extra time was the winner.
Drayton Shiner and Aydan Lawless scored in the first for Wawota, and Brady Dinwoodie tallied in the second to put the Flyers up by three. But Harcourt scored twice and Austin Fleck added one to tie the game.
Dylan DeDecker was in goal for Kipling-Windthorst, while Brendan Rinn was the netminder for Wawota, who picked up their first point of the season with the overtime loss.
The lone game on Saturday saw the Huskies defeat the Flyers 5-2. Jayden Davis and Colton Schell scored in the first period for Oxbow, and Alex Von Sprecken had the lone goal in the second to put the Huskies up by three.
Dinwoodie and Lawless scored to pull Wawota to within one, but Tayce Miller and Liam Rutten's goals put the game away for Oxbow.
Zack Miller was the Oxbow goalie, while Brendan Rinn was the Wawota goalie.
The Huskies will visit the Oil Kings on Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. The Mustangs are at the Rockets on Jan. 13 and the Cougars are at the Oil Kings on Jan. 15.
Two games are slated for Jan. 17: Wawota at Moosomin and Carnduff at Midale. Two more are set for Jan. 18: Moosomin at Oxbow and Carlyle at Wawota. All games, except for Oxbow at Kipling-Windthorst, are set to start at 8 p.m.
