ESTEVAN — SaskEnergy will be conducting controlled natural gas flaring near Estevan on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of scheduled maintenance work on the natural gas system.
Flaring will take place intermittently from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on April 29 and April 30 at the TransGas block valve site, located about 1.5 kilometres northeast of the city near the intersection of Bienfait Grid Road and Kensington Avenue.
Residents and drivers in the area may notice a flame up to 40 feet high being emitted from a flare stack temporarily connected to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure.
The process is necessary to safely remove natural gas from a section of pipeline that will be isolated for maintenance. SaskEnergy says flaring is a standard industry practice that helps reduce the carbon footprint of vented natural gas by 85 per cent.
The area around the flare will be monitored to ensure public safety, and natural gas service to residential customers will not be affected.
SaskEnergy has informed the City and Rural Municipality of Estevan, as well as the local fire department, about the flaring activity.
