ESTEVAN — Firefighters in Estevan responded to the city’s first grass fires of 2025 over the weekend, according to Estevan Fire Chief Rick Davies.

Davies said crews were dispatched to a grass fire north of the city on April 5 around 10:45 a.m.

“Crews responded and quickly brought that fire under control and extinguished it without incident,” he said. “No injuries or damage reported from that incident.”

The following day, on April 6 at approximately 1:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a second grass fire, this time south of the city, involving a farmyard.

“Crews responded. Found a grass fire occurring within a farmyard with a small outbuilding involved,” Davies said. “Crews quickly brought that fire under control and extinguished without incident. No injuries reported and damage was contained to two outbuildings and some small equipment in the area.”

He said both fires were still under investigation but may be linked to nearby controlled burning activity.

Davies confirmed these were the first grass fires of the season.

The Estevan Fire Rescue team (EFR) also handled a range of other calls over the past week.

On April 1 at 7:40 p.m., crews responded to a semi-truck fire west of the city.

“The fire had been mostly extinguished from past replies with fire extinguishers,” Davies said. “So the crews just confirmed that the fire was indeed extinguished. There were no injuries reported from that incident.”

EFR was also dispatched April 4 at 12:30 p.m. after reports of a dog falling through the ice in Woodlawn Park.

“It was confirmed that the dog had made it off the river and had returned home safely,” Davies said. “So no assistance from us was required there.”

That same day at 1 p.m., EFR responded to Bienfait Fire’s mutual aid call southeast of the city at a commercial property fire.

“Crews responded and assisted extinguishing a fire in some material handling equipment,” Davies said. “There were no injuries reported from that incident and the extent of damage is unknown at this time.”

Crews also responded to two commercial fire alarms — one on March 31 and another on April 5 — both in the northeast area of Estevan. In each case, no active fire was found.

“The alarm was due to a cooking incident,” Davies said of the first call. “So crews just assisted with resetting the alarm and cleared there.”

The second alarm was attributed to a sprinkler system malfunction.
