ESTEVAN - Two hockey players from southeast Saskatchewan are heading to the Telus Cup national U18 AAA hockey championship as members of the Regina Pat Canadians.
The Pat Canadians won the West Regional qualifying tournament April 6 with a 7-1 win over the Winnipeg Wild. Regina was dominant throughout the tournament, going 4-0 and outscoring their opponents 25-2.
The tournament featured the champions from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and a northwest Ontario league, and also had a second northwest Ontario team, since the tournament was in the province.
Defenceman Boston Tait of Estevan put up five assists in four games for the Pat Canadians, including three helpers in Regina's third game. He played all of his minor hockey in Estevan until this season.
Forward Nathan Gardiner of Gainsborough had two goals in four games for Regina. He played his minor hockey in the southeast, including several seasons in Estevan.
The Telus Cup is April 21-27 in Chilliwack, B.C.
Regina qualified for westerns by winning the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League's title, going 8-1 in the playoffs and sweeping the Moose Jaw Generals in the final.
