Will the WC Wheat Kings season be interrupted?

Rising COVID-19 cases in the province affecting a number of hockey leagues has the West Central Wheat Kings U18 AA wondering what may come of their season

UNITY — The West Central Wheat Kings U18 AA team are, like all teams in the province, wondering when or if their season will be halted, or temporarily halted as a result of the rising COVID-19 cases in the province.

No hockey league has been immune from pandemic pauses and interruptions including the NHL, WHL ,SJHL and SMAAAHL.

The Wheat Kings currently sit at a record of 13-10-2 with the second half of the season underway.

Team manager, Marli Shepherd, says, “We are happy with our team and just wishing we could have secured a couple more wins with some of the games lost by only a single goal.”

The Christmas break provided an opportunity to get over injuries on the team and return to a full roster to start the New Year.

“We are fortunate to have such a great group of players that all get along really well both on and off the ice, which makes all the team’s staff’s jobs that much easier. We aren’t sure how long this season is going to go with the changing COVID-19 regulations but have been grateful for each day that we get to go on the ice and see our team participate in the game that we all love. We hope to finish the season strong, “adds Shepherd.

Next action for the Wheaties will be Jan. 9 at home against the Saskatoon Sabrecats and the team will play on the road against Martensville Jan. 10. The Wheat Kings will not have another game until Jan. 23 when they take on the North West Stars on the road, with several other games to fine tune their season in January before the first round of playoffs begins Feb. 14. The top eight teams in each division advance to playoffs.

As of Jan. 6, the team sits in fifth spot in their Centre Four division. Hunter Sperle and Landyn Nash are in the top 20 scorers for the league.
