Wilkie awards citizens of the year

Wilkie's Isaiah Mamer, awarded Junior Citizen of the Year, and Aaron Sittler, awarded Wilkie's Citizen of the Year at the March 18 Outlaws playoff game

WILKIE ‑ During an Outlaws playoff game, Sask. West Hockey League president, and Wilkie resident, Joe Cey, had a little surprise for someone in attendance at the game.

Cey announced that Mayor David Ziegler and Recreation Director Lori Fenrich were on hand to present the 2021 Citizen of the Year Award to Aaron Sittler.

"This time of year, we award a special community member with Citizen of Year Award. This year a gentleman was nominated that is always helping out and volunteering whether its with his kids’ sports teams, his neighbours or here at the rink for the Outlaws. This guy always has a smile on his face and is ready to help out," said Cey.

The Junior Citizen of the Year award was presented earlier today to Isaiah Mamer.

"Congratulations Aaron and Isaiah,” Cey said.

Sittler, who was born and raised in the area, was nominated by his neighbours and friends for always being there with a helping hand, not matter where or when. Sittler can be seen up bright and early after snowstorms, making sure everyone can get out of their yards, ensuring everyone is safe. You know that if something needs to be done, that he will be there to lend a helping hand, not matter the task.

Sittler is an avid sports fan and has been involved in sports from an early age. He was a member of the Wilkie Brewers for many years, helping them to win league and provincial titles. He is now a coach and volunteer for his son and friends as they play baseball, following in Sittler’s footsteps.

He is a volunteer for the Wilkie Outlaws, helping whenever and wherever he can. You can see him at most home games running the clock and filling in when needed.

Sittler and Tami are also actively involved in their children’s school activities, finding time to set up and clean up whenever needed.

Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Mamer, youngest son of Greg and Paula Mamer, is a Grade 12 student at McLurg High and will be attending the University of Saskatchewan where he will play on the Huskies volleyball team.

Isaiah excels at academics and is a multi-sport athlete, playing volleyball, basketball, curling, badminton and track and field. Beside playing the sports, he is a volunteer as a minor official, linesman and keeping score and is a vocal cheerleader for the teams, giving encouragement at every game. He coaches junior volleyball and basketball. He is also an active member of the SLC and Charity in Action, a group of students who visit Bethany and Poplar Courts and does snow removal for seniors.

If you need a volunteer, Isaiah is always there to lend a hand, from calling bingo, working bottle drives, working at the booth, setting up and taking down for the tournaments and other activities.

Isaiah is also an active member of St. James Parish, as an altar server since Grade 3, serving at masses and funerals. He was an active member of the youth group, pre-pandemic. He also mows the lawns and shovels snow at the church and helps in any way he can.

Isaiah has a cheerful outlook and pleasant smile and has a friendly and caring attitude towards everyone he meets.
