WILKIE ‑ Highway 14 will be losing some more asphalt over the next two weeks as the Sask West Hockey League (SWHL) finals are finally set as the Macklin Mohawks face off against the Wilkie Outlaws.
In what ended up being an incredibly competitive semifinal series, it took Macklin all five games to dispose of the pesky Edam 3 Stars in the 1 vs 4 matchup. On the other end, Wilkie only used four games to clip the Klippers of Kindersley, thus setting up this final.
It is a rematch of the finals of the 2019-20 season. Wilkie won game one 6-4 before the finals, and an extremely long list of other things were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mohawks have hoisted the SWHL cup only once, which happened in 2011-12.
On the other end, the Wilkie Outlaws completed the drive for five in 2018-19, and are looking to complete the kick for six this year.
The season series was split as Wilkie won 8-4 in Wilkie Dec. 10, with Macklin stealing the extra point in an 4-3 shootout win Jan. 15.
The first game in this highly anticipated final series was played in Macklin and did not disappoint fans as the game had to go to overtime to determine a winner, which resulted in a 5-4 win by the Hawks. The Outlaws were outshot on net 41-29. The next two weekends will be home-and-home series between the two SWHL heavyweights as they vie for the coveted league championship.
League president, Joe Cey, says, "It has been a great season with the one-two teams in the league final. Also wishing Kindersley good luck in the provincial B final against the winner of Outlook vs. Rosetown."
Cey says there has been a lot of terrific playoff hockey that is getting better each game.
