Unity's budget will include a mill rate increase

Unity Mayor Sharon Del Frari announces mill rate increase along with construction plans for First Avenue

<Mayor Sharon Del Frari provided an update on the curling arena structural issue and has been outlined in a separate story for the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald and SASKTODAY.ca>

UNITY — Unity’s budget is just going through some tweaks. We are looking at a three-mill increase for this year. There have been no increases in the mill rate since 2017. We realize residents have a financial load to deal with due to inflation. Staff and council keep this in mind at all times. While we try not to add to financial stress, it's vital that we have the resources to maintain our infrastructure.

On a brighter note, spring is coming. The walking path in the north field may require rubber boots as the melt continues. I was able to attend the U13 girls’ hockey provincial game against Balcarres. They tied then went to Balcarres for the second game which they won along with the provincial championship. Congratulations.

I was also at the final league game for the U13 boys. It was a best-of-two game total, they had played and beat Outlook in the first game. The home and final game was a tie which meant a win. It was so exciting and very entertaining hockey.

UCHS Drama Club put on an excellent performance. They are also competing against clubs from across the province. I've also had the pleasure of watching some of the dancers from our local clubs. The music festival has been underway this past week. We have so much talent in our community. I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy performances as well.

The town-wide garage sale will run May 12, 13 and 14. Contact Valerie Middleton to have your sale posted on the map. Her number is 306-228-8339, and her email is [email protected]. Have your address ready and the times you want to run your sale for over the weekend. Book by May 5 to ensure your spot on the map.

We will also be running the adopt-a-block program for litter pickup throughout the month of May. Sign up through the town office and get your blocks picked. We provide gloves and garbage bags for your use. Sponsors provide prizes to award to the pickers.

We expect construction to begin on 1st Avenue after Easter weekend. Please watch for signs and notifications in case of detours. The crew plans to start on the west end. Busy times ahead.
