50 Years Ago

Si Campbell was re-elected as Unity Legion president.

The Unity Merchants continued in the 1972 West Central Hockey League with five wins in a row including victories over Provost and Denzil.

Overnight lows throughout the region hit -35 C and slightly lower, but nothing hitting record temperatures of -55 C that was recorded in the 1950s.

The Provincial Land Bank was scheduling meetings for the end of January. The purpose of the meetings was to present to the public proposals dealing with the operation of the proposed land bank commission.

The Unity Drama Group set objectives for the year which included little theatre, children's theatre (plays performed by adults for the enjoyment of children) and religious drama.

Newly formed KC Rescue took in 50 homeless and stranded cats, managing to find homes for all of them.

The Unity Miners were prepared for the playoffs, getting ready to play Rosetown in provincials. The Miners sat in second place in the Sask. West Hockey League standings, only one point behind Biggar.

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, P. Myron Kowalsky, visited McLurg High School in Wilkie and Macklin School.

Brad Schell, son of Herb and Marion Schell of Scott, was picked to play in the CHL Top Prospects game in Saskatoon. Schell was selected by the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL.
