Unity Recreation preparing to swap summer for fall

Unity's pool season will wrap up Sept. 4, while the arena is awaiting a couple of updates but hopes are high rink season will open on time.

UNITY — Unity lifeguards will be on deck for swimmers at the Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre until Sept. 4. This is the second year of extended days at the pool and swimmers have voiced appreciation for the recreation team’s efforts.

“We had a great swimming lesson turnout this year,” says Recreation Director Lisa Feser.

“Drowning Prevention Week activity included one of the best barbecues we have ever held. We are hosting a diving clinic, and have over 15 people registered.”

Feser said if the diving clinic results in a good turnout, she will continue to find clinics to bring to the pool as she maintains it’s always fun to try different things.

Unity’s pool numbers were up at times. On busy ball weekends, additional hours were included, and that action turned out to be a hit so Feser affirms they will continue to enact extended hours for event weekends.

“The only challenge I can think of is the transition to Lifesaving Society from Red Cross. This was a learning year for our guards to guide people into equal levels of lessons. Lauren and her staff did a great job with this, it's no easy task,” says Feser.

In other parks and recreation news, Unity Minor Ball, in partnership with the Town of Unity, is slated to begin another diamond renovation this fall.

“We have begun the process of repairing the curling rink beams to make the building safe. They expect to be done well before the season is to start so let’s keep our fingers crossed that it goes as planned, “adds Feser.

Arena season is just around the corner. Feser notes that due to the chiller failing this spring, one was ordered to be manufactured as soon as the equipment failed. It will be ready to be installed as soon as it is delivered, however, she reminds residents, “We are at the mercy of the manufacturing process now. As it stands right now, we are slated to open approximately the same time end of September. But again, we are not giving a date until the new chiller is installed.”

One of the last remaining summer events is a “Go Science Day Camp” being brought to Unity by the Saskatchewan Science Centre. The event will be held in the arena lobby on Aug. 21.
