Unity Cardinals win provincial title

A thrilling extra inning victory for the Unity Cardinals captured the senior men's Tier 3 AA provincial baseball title.

UNITY — After losing the final of the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League, the Unity Cardinals set their sights on a provincial title.

The team headed to Gull Lake Aug 11-13 to compete in a six-team men’s baseball championship.

The Cards ended round robin in first place after rattling off three straight wins, beating Gull Lake Greyhounds 12-1, Cabri River Rats 14-13 and Redvers A’s 9-7.

The Northeast Sox were their nemesis as they beat the Cards 7-4 to determine a finals spot. However, the Cards, in 10 innings, pulled out a 7-6 victory. This gives the team the Baseball Sask. senior men’s Tier 3 AA provincial title.

"Perfect ending to the season,” Team Manager Cory Wildeman said of their weekend.

“We finished 3-1 in the round robin, placing second overall, advancing us to the finals."

"The final game was tied 6-6 after five innings when we finally reached a resolution in the 10th inning winning 7-6. This was our first provincial title since 2013 for the Cardinals. Everyone contributed and things came together at the right time."

This ends the first season back for the Cardinals after a two-year hiatus. The team says they appreciate the volunteers behind the scenes, scorekeepers, umpires and the fans and look forward to seeing everyone next season.
