UNITY – Students of the Unity Karate Club brought home hardware from a recent tournament in Beaumont, Alta.

Six students attended the tournament Oct. 28 and walked away with a total of nine medals — two gold, six silver and one bronze. This year’s participants were Alexa Goring- silver in team kata and bronze in weapons; Jamal Starchief - gold in kumite (sparring) and silver in kata; Jimmy Starchief - silver in kumite; Jason Goring - silver in team kata; Christian Cristobel - gold in team kata; and Heleina Tisado - silver in kumite and silver in team kata.

The club has been running since the mid-1990s. Jason Goring, alongside his wife Amanda, took over the club two years ago when the Unity and Wilkie Karate Clubs divided. Currently, the karate club has 25 participants with a mix of youth and adults.

The members who attended this past tournament have all been training between two to six years and have won medals in the past.

Goring says he tells his students that placing in the top three and the medals are not the goal of the competition but they usually perform well.

The biggest growth he has seen with the students so far is maturity and focus in some of the younger students.

“The classes are strict and there is no fooling around, so it can be an adjustment for some. Everyone figures out the expectations quickly and are able to get the most out of their training,” adds Goring.

The next tournament will be held sometime in the spring.
