Students scaring neighborhoods for local food bank

Volunteers with the Unity Composite High School collected items for local food bank.

UNITY – Residents of Unity were more than prepared for the trick or treaters who were looking for something other than chips and chocolate bars.

This was the 11th year for the annual “We Scare Hunger” campaign run by staff and students with the Unity Composite High School. Teacher Ann Marie David was impressed with the influx of students coming to help gather items for the Unity Food Bank.

“We had 12 drivers and 29 students this year who were able to collect donations in one and a half hours. It was fantastic,” says David.

The Unity Food Bank had five volunteers on standby on the evening of Oct. 31. Food bank organizer Tomi Watt had her team working from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

“When several cars all come at the same time dropping off items, it can be overwhelming and becomes quite crowded,” Watt says. She also appreciated having men on hand to handle the heavy cases that were donated.

The UCHS students were able to collect 1,750 pounds worth of non-perishable goods to stock the shelves. They also turned in $70 in cash donations.

“The food bank is very thankful for all the help from the students, teachers and parents that helped with the Halloween tradition. Our shelves are now very full,” adds Watt.

Watt said this year’s collection total was on par with last year’s poundage. She said she was impressed with the generosity of the community.
