UNITY - In what is described, similar to NCAA basketball, as March madness, high school teams are competing in conference basketball playoffs March 10-11. A win will advance teams to regional playdowns taking place March 17-18 with a hopeful berth earned to SHSAA Hoopla provincial basketball championships.
The Unity Composite High school girls are hosting conferences March 10-11 in a 7-team event, with four teams eligible to advance to regional playdowns with wins in the top four spots.
UCHS Principal and coach, Aaron Melnyk, says, “We have a very competitive team and have worked hard all season long. We are excited for playoffs to start and looking forward to the competition. There are a lot of great teams in our category this year, and it will be an exciting month of basketball for our girls. “
Kyla Snell manages the UCHS boys’ team and says, “Sr boys’ basketball have conferences in Biggar March 11. There are four other teams competing, but no draw has been shared yet.”
Kerrobert Composite School Athletic Director, Troy Snider, says, “We are a 1A School and both teams will participate in Regionals as there will not be any Conference Playoffs.”
For Macklin School, the girl’s team will compete at conferences in Maidstone. The senior boy’s team will host conferences in Macklin March 10-11 with six teams set to compete.
McLurg girl’s basketball is looking to repeat their 2022 season success story. Coach Mark Myszczyszyn says they will travel to Outlook to LCBI to compete in the 2A girl’s conference along with Eatonia, Herbert, and LCBI.
“The rankings are sent in to SHSAA and will be shared with all competing teams the morning of March 6. The rankings determine who plays each other as everything from conferences playoffs onward is seeded by a team’s ranking.”
Whether you are a fan of the Warriors, the Broncs, the Rebels or the Sabres, basketball fever is upon community schools and March will be full of school pride and plenty of cheering in hopes of helping their teams earn a spot at upcoming provincials.
