KERROBERT — Greetings from the town of Kerrobert. Some of the happenings around our community consists of continued snow removal, youth sports and staffing changes. The town welcomes new economic development officer, Jessica Freer. She was introduced at The chamber of commerce meeting on Feb. 15. We welcome Jessica and her fresh ideas of how we can attract new business while keeping our existing business sector strong.
Town staff are still busy removing snow piles from the big snow falls we have had so far this winter. With the fluctuation in temperatures, the sand truck has also been extra busy. As far as a snow removal budget, we are doing OK because we haven’t had to call in much extra help outside of our own staff and equipment.
With the amount of snow we have had, and like most other communities, we have been dealing with several deer coming into town looking for food. I want to remind residents to not put out food as it will attract the deer at the start, but may also entice coyotes to venture into town looking for weak and hungry deer to go after. This also becomes a hazard for drivers getting around town, as well as posing a threat for those going out for walk.
I want to send a big shout out to the junior boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. The junior girls have gone undefeated this year, in both regular season and tournament play. The girls just recently won gold at districts. The boys have also had a tremendous season, and took gold at districts, winning a thriller by just one point. The senior girls and boys will be gearing up for Hoopla, which are high school basketball tournaments. We wish them much success as well.
We had some terrible accidents just south of Kerrobert at the beginning of February. The first was a fatal accident on Feb. 1 due to icy highway conditions. Feb. 3 there was a vehicle rollover and also Feb. 4 another vehicle rollover due to icy conditions. All three accidents were on the same stretch of highway between Kerrobert and the Dodsland turnoff. I want to thank all our first responders. They see and deal with these types of things, and it isn’t easy to go on with business as usual. They see and deal with grief that the rest of us may not always realize. We obviously think about the people involved in an accident, but please don’t forget those who respond to these situations, and no matter what the weather is like they go.
