Kerrobert girls undefeated in districts with golden finish

A perfect season for Kerrobert junior girl's basketball team as they remain undefeated earning a gold medal at Battle West District Championships hosted at home Feb. 11

KERROBERT — Junior basketball season culminated with teams competing for the Battle West Athletic District basketball championship Feb. 11. The girls’ division competed in Kerrobert while the boys’ district event was held in Hafford.

Kerrobert girls went into the weekend’s event undefeated from their season. Hosting at home, the KCS girls continued their winning streak capturing a district gold medal by a score of 62-30.

Girls’ coach, Troy Snider, says, “The girls hosted the championship and defeated Unity to win the gold and complete their undefeated season. We are very proud of how hard these girls worked all season. They never stopped learning and always played as a team.”

Snider adds, “The KCS boys competed in Hafford at their district event and defeated their hosts by one point in the final to claim gold.” The final score was 57-56.

The KCS girls team roster included: Julia Ley, Sophie St. Pierre, Brooklyn Kraft, Tommi Schell-Wack, Hennessy MacKinnon, Madison Ley, Ashlyn Underdahl, Nicola Joubert, coach Kate Snider and coach Troy Snider.

KCS junior boys’ coach, Bev Kraft says of her team, “After defeating Unity, 53-39, the boys got a second chance of redemption against Hafford, after taking their only loss on the season to them in December. The gold medal game was head-to-head the whole way through, with KCS down 28-21 at the half. The boys fought through adversity the whole game — fouls, injuries, etc. They dug down deep and found the effort they needed to finish strong.

“At the end of the fourth, the score was tied 51-51 and then there was a three-minute OT, resulting in another back and forth scoring match with everyone on the edge of their seats. When all was said and done, the Rebels came out on top, 57-56 to earn the gold and the title of district champions.”

The roster for the KCS junior boys’ basketball team includes: Coach Bev Kraft, Cohen Phillips, Graydon Neumeier, Avery Volk, Bronc Johnson, Nic Derocher, Quaid MacKinnon, Rylan Abbott, Alex Lavigne, Aiden Fillion, Ryker Seversen, Ben Lavigne, Jacob Phillips, and Grayson Nunweiler.

There was not a McLurg boys’ team at the Battle West District event however the McLurg girls’ basketball team fell to Kerrobert in an earlier game putting them in the bronze medal match. The team was a decided victory with a 45-8 win over Cut Knife earning them the district bronze medal.

McLurg Coach Amy Suchan led her team of Alivia Suchan; Addisen Suchan; Nevaeh Lang; Myla Huber; Caleah Brebner; Marley Herzog; Serena Schmidt; Hanna Hyland; Mere Guadalupe, and Taylor Bantle to their success in the event.

Unity Composite High School girls had a tight first game against Wilkie and were able to pull it together and finish strong. A UCHS Facebook post says that the lady Warriors played their strongest game against Kerrobert in the gold medal match and are proud to bring home the silver medal, demonstrating that their hard work this season paid off.

The roster for the UCHS junior girls team includes Keanna Kelly, Shayna Wildeman, Chloe Parungo, Alyssa Cons, Anna Sarich, Lorrie Henderson, Kennidy Fabrick, Maycie Gumpinger, Leighton Forbes and Kali Scherr.

Unity Composite High School boys lost to Kerrobert in their opening game putting them in the bronze medal match. The Warriors had a hard-fought game defeating Spiritwood by a score of 55-51 earning the district bronze medal for their efforts. The roster for the UCHS junior boy's team includes Coach Tony Riou along with players Ethan Ruberry, Josh Vermeulen, Jaden Blanchette, Kellen Headrick, Bennett Bretzer, Connor Ralston, Kai Riou, River Thompson, Daxon L'Heureux, Josh Delhommeau, Sebastian Neigum, Reid Ducherer, Dane Rewerts, Dylan Gavel and Rowan May.
