UNITY – The Unity Composite High School senior girls’ basketball team held their annual Pink Tournament on March 1 and 2. Eight teams, including Unity, battled it out on the court, while raising money to be donated for breast cancer research.
Support from the community was outstanding, according to coach Aaron Melnyk, with the team raising $3,000. Fundraisers included a raffle for a handmade pink quilt, a bake sale and tournament merchandise available for purchase.
A special halftime show was prepared for the game between Unity and Maidstone on March 1. The graduating players were recognized alongside their families and the Unity Public School basketball team were welcomed to play a junior NBA game.
The tournament was cut short though due to the winter storm that swept most of the province. The UCHS team was able to play two games, winning them both before the remainder of the tournament was cancelled.
“There were lots of competitive games and we were lucky to get some in over the weekend before the team headed to Maidstone for conferences,” said Melnyk.
Conferences were held March 9, with Unity playing Biggar in their first game. They quickly advanced to the conference finals, going face to face with Kindersley. The game went into overtime, where the Warriors were defeated. The team will be advancing to regionals this coming weekend in Lanigan.
