Outlaws lose their first game in SWHL season

The SWHL season saw a couple firsts Jan. 15 weekend when Wilkie Outlaws incurred their first loss of the season, and a female duo were part of the officiating team at the Jan. 16 Outlaws game held in Wilkie.

For the first time in the SWHL the Wilkie Outlaws incurred a loss. It was an overtime loss at the hands of Macklin Mohawks, so it still gives them a point in the standings and the team continues to hold top spot in the league standings.

After the Jan. 15 shootout loss to Macklin, the Outlaws continued the Jan. 15th weekend games with a sounding 11-4 defeat of the visiting Kerrobert Tigers in an afternoon game. Garrett Cameron netted four goals and one assist in the game, while Blake Young had two goals and an assist. Rory Gregoire continues to sit in top spot of league scoring leaders and had two goals in the Tigers game.

Unity Miners had a one game weekend on Jan. 14 where they defeated the Kerrobert Tigers 3-2, with Dalyn McCubbing netting two of those goals. The Miners have some work to do before league playoffs as they currently sit in sixth spot, one point behind Hafford.

Kerrobert Tigers continue to struggle losing both games Jan. 14 and 16, putting them in the bottom spot of league standings.

Macklin Mohawks had a .500 weekend losing to the Kindersley Klippers on Jan. 14 then surprising the Wilkie Outlaws with a shootout victory on Jan. 15, delivering Wilkie their first loss of the season. The Mohawks sit in fourth spot of league standings.

According to SWHL website, it looks like January will wrap up regular season with only the top four teams advancing to league playoffs, leaving only two weeks for fans to cheer on their favorite teams in regular season of senior hockey.

Something new to the SWHL this season is the addition of female officials, as seen in the Jan. 16 game hosted by the Wilkie Outlaws. Britt Danberg and Jessica Coleman, along with Wilkie resident, Brandon Chester, joined by Jared Wilkinson of North Battleford made up the stripes team officiating the game.

Every team in SWHL, with the exception of Unity, are entered into provincial playoffs which will begin the first week of February. Matchups can be seen on the SWHL or Hockey Sask. website.
