KERROBERT ‑ Jacob Ambros, No. 88, playing for the Saskatoon Hilltops as a receiver is a former Kerrobert Rebel football player.
Nov. 14, Ambros will play in the Prairie Football Conference championship, playing the undefeated Regina Thunder. The Thunder roster includes former Unity Warrior football quarterback, Zenon Orobko.
Both men learned to transition from their high school six-man game to the junior football’s 12-man game.
“I found the transition from six to 12 man a fun one. It was tough for a little bit at the start going to such a bigger game from what I had in high school. I’ve had lots of learning experiences so far and I love it,” Ambros said.
“I played against Zenon Orobko a couple times in high school with football and basketball. We did a lot of football camps together, and became friends there," he adds.
Any athlete knows when competing in a sport, friendship sits on the sidelines until the game is over.
The Hilltops have won six consecutive Canadian Bowls between 2014 and 2019. From 2017-19 seasons combined, the Hilltops lost only one game in mid-season of 2017. The road to the Canadian Bowl starts with winning the PFC championship.
Dubbed as an epic matchup highly anticipated by Saskatchewan football fans, the question remains if the Toppers can retain their title or if Regina can beat this team three times in a row this season.
Ambros says, “I’m looking forward to the matchup next week against the Thunder. They are a strong team and I believe it will be an amazing game between the Hilltops and Thunder. The last quarter of our semifinal Huskies game sure had my heart pumping. It was incredible to see our offence march down the field in less then a minute and score, to take the lead. This shows that our team can get it done no matter what.”
Maintaining their hard work at practices to prepare for this game is one of the keys Ambros says will be necessary for this final. “We want to win this. We are going into this is somewhat of a chip on our shoulder for this game.
“My support back home has been great. My family has been so supportive of me and my team. They haven’t missed a home game yet. And I have support from my good friends at home.”
