SASKATOON — A page was created for Evan Hardy Collegiate teacher Sean Hayes, who helped put out the flames on a 15-year-old high school student who was set on fire on Thursday, Sept. 5, inside the school premises.
Allison Cameron organized the GoFundMe page, which already has 449 people donating, with the most significant amount being $500. The GoFundMe page Tuesday morning had raised $26,180, more than double the $10,00 target.
Cameron said she started the fundraiser on behalf of Hayes and his colleagues at Evan Hardy, describing the teacher as a remarkable and dedicated individual who risked his safety to save the 15-year-old victim.
On Thursday last week, a 14-year-old student allegedly poured liquid on the victim and lit her on fire. Hayes was one of the teachers who rushed to help the victim.
"Amid this crisis, Mr. Hayes demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness, risking his safety to ensure a student's well-being. His actions have saved a life and had a profound and lasting impact on the student's life," wrote Cameron on the GoFundMe page.
"Mr. Hayes has always been a pillar of support and care for his students, and his quick thinking during this emergency truly highlights his exceptional character. His heroic actions were extraordinary and embody the best of what it means to be an educator."
She added Hayes' selfless act of bravery is worthy of admiration and support, which is why fundraising was organized to assist him with his medical bills, counselling services, and other expenses that might occur as he recovers from his injuries.
"This GoFundMe campaign aims to ease Mr. Hayes's financial burden, allowing him to focus on his recovery and continue his positive impact on the lives of his students. Your contribution can make a significant difference," said Cameron.
She then encouraged everyone to share the GoFundMe page to spread information about the fundraising efforts. They welcome any amount given, as it would go a long way toward helping Hayes' recovery.
"Every donation and every share brings us closer to our goal and shows Mr. Hayes that his heroic actions have not gone unnoticed. We are deeply grateful for your support and generosity. Regardless of size, your contribution will significantly impact Mr. Hayes's life. Thank you for honouring his bravery and helping him during this critical time."
