SASKATOON — A relative of the 15-year-old girl who was set on fire in their school has started a GoFundMe page to help the family with expenses, which could reach tens of thousands of dollars.

The incident happened on Thursday at Evan Hardy Collegiate, where a 14-year-old female poured liquid on the victim and set her on fire. School staff helped put out the fire, while a School Resources Unit officer, who was at the school on another matter when the violent attack happened, managed to arrest the suspect.

The accused teen appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Friday, Sept. 6, where she faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and arson.

Students and other concerned citizens left flowers and get well soon cards in a make-shift memorial in front of the school after the horrific events on Thursday in their school.

The victim was reportedly airlifted to a hospital in Edmonton, which has a Burn Unit that provides treatment, care, and rehabilitation to persons who suffered burns. The unit also educates on how to deal with the injuries.

As of posting time, over $40,000 had been raised from 594 donors, exceeding the target amount of $25,000.

Ariel Morin, who started the GoFundMe page, stated that her cousin is like a bright light in their family because of her wit, humour, skills, and talents.

"She is a kind, caring, bright young woman who is much beloved by all who have had the pleasure of meeting her. The road ahead of this recent tragedy is expected to be long. We are here in person and in prayer to support Rebecca and the family," said Morin.

She added that her uncle, aunt, and her cousin's brother would remain at her side to comfort, encourage, and be her source of strength in this difficult time.

"Your support will help relieve some stress and worry as they will be away from home for an undetermined time. My aunt and uncle will not leave her side until they can bring her home and will have no income during this time," said Morin.

"Every dollar raised will go directly to them so they don't have to worry about their financial situation and can instead focus on the well-being and healing of their baby girl. Everyone deserves to feel safe and be free from harm."

Another relative posted on social media that the victim, whose mother is her niece, is a beautiful, kind soul.

"[She] literally wouldn't hurt a fly. This will be a long haul for the family. If you can see it in your heart to donate, please do. Prayers for [her] and her family are also appreciated," she added.
