Fitness hearing to be held for man charged in axe incident

Nelson allegedly fled after attacking a senior and within an hour police issued a SaskAlert warning the public that a dangerous man with a large axe or edged weapon was at large

MEADOW LAKE – A trial for a 29-year-old man accused of assaulting a 74-year-old senior before fleeing with an axe didn’t proceed.

A trial for Jordan Andrew Scott Nelson was scheduled to start in Meadow Lake court Feb. 24  but instead a fitness hearing has been set for April 7.

A Mental Health Assessment (MHA) of Nelson was first ordered June 2021. Last month it was determined Nelson was fit to stand trial and it was set for February.

He was arrested March 11, 2021, after an incident the day prior. According to Meadow Lake RCMP, at about 1:20 p.m. on March 10 they received a report of a serious assault in a rural area in the R. M. of Meadow Lake. The victim was taken to hospital in serious condition. Nelson allegedly fled the scene and within the hour police issued a SaskAlert warning the public that a dangerous man with a large axe or edged weapon was at large.

Officers from multiple detachments searched for Nelson and he was soon arrested without incident in the100 block of Second Street East in Meadow Lake.

Police say the victim and Nelson were known to each other. Nelson was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a weapon. He was denied bail and remains in custody.

The charges against Nelson haven't been proven in court.
