MELFORT - The City of Melfort's council held a special meeting to discuss the preliminary 2025 capital budget.
Adam Homes, City Manager, presented to council in his report recommendations for a total capital budget of $6.8 million.
Homes said in his report that multiple key projects and initiatives are aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents of Melfort, including investments in infrastructure, facilities, and essential services.
Key highlights are a new fire truck which is expected to be delivered in 2025. It was approved in 2023 at a total cost of $631,000.
The City of Melfort has set aside $500,000 for replacing the roof of the historic post office. There are three flat roofs on the historic post office. All three roofs are actively leaking into the building. Homes's report said maintaining sump pumps on the roofs to actively move the water towards the drains is no longer effective as the number of leaks keeps growing. The city’s architect has conducted analysis on the roof and provided an estimate for roof repairs. Approximately $100,000 is allocated for the schematic design of the Northern Lights Palace project, which is the first phase of the architectural design process for its rehabilitation.
The City of Melfort’s public works department continues to work on constructing a new engineered landfill cell while decommissioning the existing landfill, with a budget of $2.5 million. The city will also purchase a landfill compactor at a price tag of $1 million.
A total of $2.2 million is allocated for road and sidewalk rehabilitation, as well as the replacement of the airport fueling station. The largest project includes the reconstruction of McKendry Avenue and Albert Street.
